Former Super Eagles defender Ifeanyi Udeze has criticized the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) decision to appoint Eric Chelle as the head coach of the Super Eagles.
Udeze questioned Chelle’s appointment, citing his poor performance as Mali’s coach in the World Cup qualifiers.
“A coach Mali sacked for a poor run in the World Cup qualifiers, does he deserve this job?” Udeze asked.
Udeze also expressed his disappointment that Augustine Eguavoen, the former interim coach of the Super Eagles, was overlooked for the job. He claimed that Eguavoen has a better CV than Chelle.
According to Udeze, Chelle accepted the job only to boost his CV and does not care about Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup.
Chelle is expected to lead Nigeria in the remaining games of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, despite being sacked by Mali for his poor performance in the same qualifiers.
