NFF President Spills: Why Nigerians Are Divided Over Super Eagles’ New Coach Eric Chelle

Ibrahim Musa Gusau

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Ibrahim Gusau, has attributed the divergent opinions among Nigerians on the appointment of Eric Chelle as the new Super Eagles coach to the country’s passion for football. Gusau noted that Nigerians are very passionate about the game, leading to different reactions to Chelle’s appointment.

Gusau appealed to Nigerians to come together and support Chelle, stating that the NFF believes he has the qualities to achieve success with the Super Eagles. He assured that the NFF will provide Chelle with all the necessary support to succeed in his role.

Chelle’s appointment was confirmed by the NFF Executive Committee on Tuesday, following a recommendation by the Technical and Development Committee. The 47-year-old Franco-Malian coach will be unveiled to the public on Monday in Abuja, along with his assistants.

Chelle will lead the Super Eagles B team at the African Nations Championship next month before focusing on the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. His first matches in charge will be against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March.
