Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the former manager of Manchester United, is in negotiations to become the new head coach of Turkish club Besiktas. The 51-year-old Norwegian has been out of management since being sacked by United in 2021. If appointed, this will be his first managerial position since his departure from Old Trafford.
Besiktas, currently sixth in the Turkish Super Lig, are looking to replace Dutchman Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who parted ways with the club in November. Solskjaer’s potential appointment would see him take on the role of technical director, equivalent to the head coach position previously held by Van Bronckhorst.
Solskjaer had a mixed tenure as Manchester United manager, guiding the team to a second-place Premier League finish and Europa League final, but ultimately leaving without winning a trophy. Prior to his appointment at United, he managed Molde and Cardiff City. As a player, Solskjaer enjoyed a successful 11-season stint at United, scoring 126 goals, including the winner in the 1999 Champions League final.
The potential move to Besiktas would mark Solskjaer’s return to management after a two-year hiatus. The Turkish club will be hoping that Solskjaer’s experience and expertise can help them climb the league table and achieve success in the remainder of the season.
