Injury Blow! South Africa Star Ruled Out Ahead of Crucial World Cup Qualifiers

South Africa’s World Cup dreams have taken a hit as star midfielder Relebohile Mofokeng has been ruled out of the final two Group C qualifiers due to injury. The news was confirmed by head coach Hugo Broos during a press conference on Monday.

With Mofokeng sidelined, Broos has called up young talent Mduduzi Shabalala as his replacement. The coach expressed confidence in the new addition but admitted the timing of the injury is far from ideal.

“There are also two players who haven’t arrived yet because they played on Sunday,” Broos added, referring to Lyle Foster and Sphephelo Sithole, who are expected to join the squad late.

The setback comes just days before South Africa’s crucial clash against Zimbabwe on Friday. The team needs a strong finish to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

South Africa currently sit second in Group C with 14 points, following a FIFA-imposed points deduction. The pressure is now on to deliver without one of their brightest stars.
