U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked fresh controversy after threatening to pull the 2026 FIFA World Cup matches scheduled to take place in Boston, citing recent unrest in the city.
Speaking in an interview, Trump claimed that parts of Boston had been “taken over” by violent demonstrations and hinted that the city might lose its World Cup game hosting rights.
Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts — home of the New England Patriots and located about 30 miles from Boston — is set to host seven World Cup games when the U.S. co-hosts the tournament with Mexico and Canada.
When asked about Boston’s Democratic mayor, Michelle Wu, Trump called her “intelligent” but slammed her as “radical left,” adding:
“We could take them away. I love the people of Boston, and I know the games are sold out. But your mayor is not good.”
His remarks come after pro-Palestinian protests earlier this month turned violent at Boston Common, leaving four police officers injured and resulting in multiple arrests.
Trump has previously floated the idea of declaring certain U.S. cities ‘not safe’ for the World Cup, potentially altering FIFA’s detailed 2022 hosting plan that includes venues near New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
With Boston’s World Cup future now in doubt, fans are anxiously waiting to see if Trump’s threat turns into action — or just another political play!
