Claude Le Roy, a veteran coach who won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Cameroon in 1988, has identified Nigeria as one of the top contenders for the 2025 tournament. Le Roy, who led Cameroon to victory over Nigeria in the 1988 final, believes that the Super Eagles have a strong chance of winning the title.

Le Roy’s list of favorites also includes hosts Morocco, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Egypt, and Algeria. He noted that these teams have a strong track record in the competition and are likely to contend for the title. The 2025 AFCON tournament will be held in Morocco from December 21 to January 18, 2026.

Nigeria has been drawn into a group alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania. The Super Eagles will begin their campaign against Tanzania on December 23 at the Fez Stadium in Fez. They will then face Tunisia and Uganda in their subsequent group matches.

Le Roy, who is now 77, looks forward to returning to Morocco, where he achieved his greatest coaching success. He praised the country’s ability to host major tournaments, saying that it is capable of organizing a World Cup.
