Football administrators, former Ibadan-based footballers, and stakeholders in Oyo State are rallying behind a grassroots football revival to nurture the next generation of talents. Temitope Obideyi, a key figure in the initiative, revealed that discussions with the State Government, football administrators, and former Ibadan-based footballers have emphasized the urgent need to return to grassroots development.
Obideyi told Boluwaji Ogunmola that the association has submitted a proposal to the Oyo State Government for a statewide secondary school football competition across all zones. The tournament aims to uncover hidden talents, with a panel of ex-internationals and scouts set to monitor and select outstanding players for further development.
“The only way forward is to go back to the grassroots, and everyone is on the same page with me on this,” Obideyi stated. He expressed gratitude to the state government, led by Governor Seyi Makinde and the Sports Commissioner, Hon. Wasilat Adegoke for their swift approval of the proposal.
“We appreciate the government’s support—the proposal was approved even before submission, following our discussions. Everything is progressing smoothly, and the project will commence soon,” he added.
Unlike conventional tournaments, this initiative focuses on talent hunting, with plans to support selected players in both their football careers and educational pursuits. Obideyi emphasized that the program is designed to provide a holistic development pathway for young athletes.
With preparations underway, the tournament is expected to kick off in the coming weeks, marking a significant step in Oyo State’s efforts to revitalize football at the grassroots level.
