The Ibadan Ex-Professional Football Association, in partnership with the Oyo State Government through the Ministry of Education, has finalized plans for a groundbreaking statewide secondary school football championship set to commence in October. This talent development initiative will follow a three-tier structure: local government qualifiers, zonal playoffs, and state finals.
The tournament, officially endorsed by the Oyo State Ministry of Education, represents a collaborative effort between former football stars in Ibadan and the State government to revive grassroots football development. “This is our collective commitment to rebuilding football from the foundation up,” said Temitope Obideyi, Chairman of the Ibadan Ex-Pros Association.
Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration has provided full institutional support for the project, with the Ministry of Education handling school participation logistics while the ex-professionals oversee technical aspects. Sports Commissioner Hon. Wasilat Adegoke confirmed the government’s backing, stating, “We’re creating a sustainable pipeline for talent discovery.”
The competition format ensures comprehensive coverage across all 33 local government areas, with matches beginning at the school level before progressing through local and zonal eliminations. A technical committee comprising former international players and certified coaches will identify standout talents throughout the tournament.
Unique to this initiative is its dual focus on sports and academic development. Selected players will benefit from educational scholarships alongside football training programs, ensuring balanced personal growth. “We’re not just looking for players – we’re developing complete individuals,” Obideyi emphasized.
The Ibadan Ex-Pros Association brings decades of collective experience to the project, with members committed to mentoring participants. “Our members understand what it takes to succeed at the highest levels, and we’re ready to pass on that knowledge,” the association stated.
“This tournament represents a new dawn for football development in our state,” concluded Obideyi. “Through this partnership between ex-professionals and government, we’re creating lasting structures to produce Oyo State’s next generation of stars.”
