Football fans around the world have been left in shock after reports emerged that former Real Madrid winger Royston Drenthe has suffered a stroke.
According to a statement from FC de Rebellen, the 38-year-old was hospitalized on Friday and is currently receiving treatment. The organization, which represents several former professional footballers, confirmed the distressing news in an official update.
“Last Friday, Royston Drenthe suffered a stroke. Drenthe is currently receiving good care and is in good hands. The team and those involved hope for a speedy recovery,” the statement read.
Drenthe rose to fame with Feyenoord before earning a big move to Real Madrid, where he won the LaLiga title in 2007. The Dutch winger later featured in the Premier League with Everton, and also had stints at Reading and Sheffield Wednesday.
