It was a night to forget for Remo Stars FC, as the Nigerian side suffered a crushing 5–1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa in the first leg of the CAF Champions League second round on Sunday.
The match, played at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, saw the visitors dominate from start to finish, silencing the home crowd with a ruthless attacking display.
Tashreeq Matthews and Peter Shalulile struck early to give the South African champions a 2–0 halftime lead, leaving Remo Stars chasing shadows.
After the break, Miguel Reisinho made it 3–0 in the 60th minute, before substitutes Arthur De Oliveira and Katlego Ntsabeleng added two more goals in the 74th and 84th minutes respectively to complete the rout.
Remo Stars finally gave their fans something to cheer when Samson Olasupo fired home a spectacular long-range consolation goal in the 76th minute — but it was too little, too late.
With a four-goal deficit, the Ogun-based side faces a monumental task in the return leg if they hope to keep their CAF Champions League dream alive.
